US Open 2023: Defending champ Alcaraz returns as a favorite of the fans, but not of the oddsmakers NEW YORK (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz wishes he could go a little more unnoticed as he tries to move around the home of the U.S. Open. That’s not possible, of course. New York is the last place to find quiet when you’re the star of the show, and even at just 20 years old, it appears the Spaniard is already that in tennis. He may not be the favorite of the oddsmakers despite being the defending champion — Novak Djokovic is back, after all — but he certainly seems to be a popular choice among fans. They will have to wait one more day to watch him. Alcaraz isn’t on the schedule Monday for the first day of play, when top-ranked Iga Swiatek opens her title defense in the afternoon and both 19-year-old Coco Gauff and Djokovic play at night.Alcaraz is scheduled to play Dominik Koepfer on Tuesday night, providing an extra day to set aside the distractions and hype that were already starting even before he won the title last year and have snowballed since.“Well, my life changed a lot, a lot,” Alcaraz ...

McLaughlin has fastest qualify for Sunday’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 but starts tenth. MADISON, Ill. (AP) — Scott McLaughlin earned his fifth career IndyCar pole ahead of Sunday’s Bommarito 500, but if he wants to earn his first career win on an oval, he will have to do so from the No. 10 starting position.McLaughlin is one of six drivers who were assessed a nine-position grid penalty for unapproved use of a fifth engine this season.“I just want an oval win so bad,” McLaughlin said. “I’ll do anything I can for an oval win right now. I’m really determined to get one. It’s the last thing on my checklist.”McLaughlin completed his qualifying laps in 49.1936 seconds. Team Penske teammate Josef Newgarden will start in the top position after completing his qualifying laps in 49.3448 seconds.McLaughlin can finish the season no higher than second place in the IndyCar driver standings, but Newgarden remains mathematically alive sitting four points behind of Scott Dixon and trailing leader Alex Palou by 105 points heading into the third-to-last race of the season.“I think there’...

Man City and 10-man Liverpool leave it late to secure victories in the Premier League Erling Haaland missed a penalty. Virgil van Dijk was shown a straight red card. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kyle Walker made sloppy defensive errors leading to goals.Manchester City and Liverpool delivered performances rife with errors from their star names in the Premier League on Sunday.Late winners ensured they didn’t prove costly.City is the only team to win its opening three matches after beating Sheffield United 2-1, but only because of an 88th-minute goal from Rodri that spared the blushes of Haaland and Walker.Haaland struck a first-half penalty against the post and squandered a slew of other chances in an unusually profligate display from the leading scorer in the league last season. He finally found the net — doesn’t he always? — in the 63rd to put City ahead but then it was Walker’s time to mess up, when he attempted a backheel in his own area and gave up possession from which Sheffield United equalized.Rodri, the scorer of City’s winner in the Champ...

Rafael Ortega hits walk-off single against Angels as David Peterson turns in best outing for Mets this season David Peterson has been able to maintain his confidence throughout a challenging season, but the Mets are hoping he can build up more of it with a few more good starts in August and September.Peterson turned in a solid performance against the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday afternoon at Citi Field in the Mets’ 3-2 walk-off win. He didn’t get the decision, but it was a victory of sorts for the Mets who have struggled to get their young arms on a consistent track. With the game tied at 2-2, the Mets loaded the bases on right-hander Reynaldo Lopez (2-7). Rafael Ortega lined one to right field that went right at Hunter Renfroe, but the outfielder couldn’t glove it and pinch-runner Tim Locastro scored easily.Peterson turned in what could arguably be considered his best performance of the year, limiting the Angels to one earned run on three hits over seven innings. Peterson walked three and struck out eight, which tied his season-high mark. It was the first time all season t...
