Week 7 high school football preview: St. John’s Prep-Catholic Memorial battle figures to be a dandy

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:41:15 GMT

Something will give on Saturday when the team with the state’s longest winning streak squares off against a team which hasn’t lost against in-state competition since 2019.Defending Div. 1 state champion St. John’s Prep (6-0) has won 13 straight game since a 28-17 loss last Oct. 15 to the team it will host this weekend, Catholic Memorial (4-1). The last Massachusetts team to knock off the Knights were the Eagles (21-14) in the 2019 Div. 1 state championship game. There may be no love lost between the programs, but the level of respect they have for one another is off the chart. St. John’s Prep coach Brian St. Pierre and his Catholic Memorial counterpart, John DiBiaso, know this is going to be a gridiron battle.“They’re so talented on both sides of the ball as well as special teams,” St. Pierre said. “They’re tremendous up front and so well coached. They have players who are capable of putting you in a bind.”St. John’s Prep might not have the s...

Justin Tucker had made field goals to win the AFC championship game and give the Ravens a cushion in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl. He was the most accurate kicker in NFL history, already talked about as the rare specialist worthy of selection to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.He didn’t need a signature moment, but he had a chance to create one as he lined up to kick a 66-yard field goal at Detroit’s Ford Field on the afternoon of Sept. 26, 2021.The Ravens will play the Lions again Sunday. The last time they did, Tucker put his stamp on football history. His field goal set a record and handed the Ravens a victory. More than that, it gave the New York Times Magazine and “60 Minutes” a hook as they lined up to profile Tucker, proclaiming him the greatest ever at his unusual trade.“Look, I’d be lying to you if I said I didn’t put a lot of value on that particular kick,” Tucker said Thursday. “It was a special moment for all of ...

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Protesters marched from several mosques to the heavily guarded U.S. Embassy in Indonesia’s capital Friday to denounce the staunch American support for Israel and demand an end to Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip.Similar protests also took place in front of the United Nations mission, a few kilometers (miles) from the embassy, and in the compound of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Authorities estimated that about 1,000 people participated in the rallies across Jakarta following Friday prayers in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation.A brutal incursion into southern Israel by Hamas fighters on Oct. 7 provoked Israel to declare war against the militant group that rules Gaza. The Israeli siege of and airstrikes on the Palestinian territory were the focus earlier this week of demonstrations at Egyptian universities, inside a congressional office building in Washington, outside the Israeli Embassy in Bogota and near the U.S. Embas...

Australia decides against canceling Chinese company’s lease of strategically important port

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — The Australian government announced Friday it has decided not to cancel a Chinese company’s 99-year lease on strategically important Darwin Port despite U.S. concerns that the foreign control could be used to spy on its military forces. The Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet said it decided after an investigation of the eight-year-old lease that current monitoring and regulation measures are sufficient to manage security risks for critical infrastructure such as the port in the northern garrison city of Darwin.“Australians can have confidence that their safety will not be compromised while ensuring that Australia remains a competitive destination for foreign investment,” it said in a statement.Landbridge Industry Australia, a subsidiary of Rizhao-based Shandong Landbridge Group, signed the lease with the debt-laden Northern Territory government in 2015. That was three years after U.S. Marines began annual rotations through Darwin as part of the U.S. p...

Five takeaways from Biden’s Oval Office address

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:41:15 GMT

(The Hill) - President Biden addressed the nation from the Oval Office Thursday evening. The main topics of the 15-minute speech were the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, and the war in Ukraine. The Middle East has entered a horrific new phase since Hamas killed about 1,400 Israelis in a surprise attack on Oct. 7. Israeli reprisals have killed around 3,800 Palestinians. A ground invasion of Gaza by Israel could come at any moment. On Ukraine, polls show American public commitment to the war wavering as the price tag for aid keeps rising. Biden’s speech was also delivered against a backdrop of dysfunction on Capitol Hill, where the House has been without a Speaker since Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was ousted on Oct. 3. Here are the main takeaways from Biden’s speech. An attempt to weave together Ukraine, Israel and Gaza The central point of the speech was to make the case for new tranches of aid to Ukraine and to Israel.  B...
